Preparedness
We're preparing for the next event which isolates the canyon ( flood, fire ) or which causes us to evacuate the Canyon ( fire ) Our uphill Neighbors have created a very handy page, which we'll link to... http://www.ssepo.org/basic-steps.html
You
Yes you. you have to be able to get the heck out of Dodge if there is something going on. First order is Communications. The second order of business is your Go Kit
Neighborhood Coordinators
Using a 'divide and conquer' approach we've divided the Canyon into 16 separate neighborhoods, and looked for volunteers to co-ordinate activities in each neighborhood.
In the greater scheme of organized emergency preparedness these folks are called Preparedness/Neighborhood Coordinators.
Community Emergency Response Team: CERT
CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) volunteers are a group of community members who are ready respond as an auxiliary to the fire department in the event of a major disaster. CERT team members:
- Receive 20 hours of training delivered over 4 weekend days.
- Learn techniques in the areas of: first aid, light search and rescue, fire extinguisher use, medical triage, emergency communication and more.
- Participate in periodic drills/exercises on a volunteer-friendly schedule.
- Learn how to remain safe while helping others.
- Assist Fire and other Emergency response personnel in the event of a large-scale disaster.
If you are interested in CERT training use this form to request information: http://www.lahondafire.org/get-involved/nest-cert/
A number of canyon folks have CERT training
- Catherine
- Wendy
- Lisa
- Don
- Casey
- ( others? )
As far as the Coastside Emergency Corps has defined organizations we are in South Coast CERT or Branch 3
From the Tunnel to Ano Nuevo there are 4 branches of South Coast CERT
- Branch 1 Ashley Gray [email protected]
- Branch 2 John Muller [email protected]
- Branch 3 Robert Smith [email protected] <-- Butano Canyon
- Branch 4 Peggy Wargo [email protected]
Our Forest
We're living in a Forest which has been in drought conditions for most of the last 10 years. Even before that in the 60's Pescadero was the location of a wildfire which destroyed 30,000 acres. Rob Skinner ( et al ) has been working on a community plan to reduce the undergrowth and fuel. A meeting in early November featuring Rich Samson ( sp ) was very eye opening. The Forest page is where we're gathering his insights and preparing or response.
Our Roads
The Butano Water Company is responsible for our Preparedness/Roads. During the 'Tree Trimming' meeting in November 2018 Cal Fire's Forestry guy turned the direction of the meeting to discuss issues he saw with firefighting in our Canyon. The Preparedness/Roads page is where we're reviewing his suggestions.
Scenarios
Scenarios can be useful in providing a focus for research, responses and reality-checks.
Investigating Escape Routes
Emergency Hut
- we need to assess just what kind of medical supply we want to maintain in the Hut. Dr. Rich Lee of Portola Heights has an article in the most recent South Skylines Association newsletter on just this topic.
