Fire Scenarios

Scenarios can be useful in providing a focus for research, responses and reality-checks. Please suggest scenarios, using the examples you find on that page.

Some backgrounders on local fire plans:

CalFire grants

Our community should be a fine candidate for CalFire grants. Update: Nope. We're not large enough nor do we have a proper non-profit to receive grants.

2018

At the end of 2018 the question of CalFire grants came up. Casey did a 2 week sprint but in the end was unable to pull enough together to file for a grant. Here's the work log for that period.

A fair amount of background work was done which should be reusable in the upcoming year.

We have had some CalFire / SMRCD funded chipper days in 2019 due to the 2018 granting period.

2019

This work has started again. The work area, just a log for now.

  • the guy Casey was working with at the RCD has quit / been fired / is no longer there. the brakes are on, or rather the focus is shifting to Firewise Community designation at this point.
  • CaseyD has worked with the San Mateo County Firewise director and folks from RCD on our county's grant request. It looks like it's going to focus on neighborhoods on the edge of SRA's - the LRA of Belmont Heights and San Carlos' Devonshire Canyon. It's important to note that during the past year CalFire has been sending the message that 'historically there is about 1 grant per CalFire district. This has lead to a situation where both San Mateo and Santa Cruz counties share a district and have _plenty_ of areas which have laudable grant requests. CalFire folks have been using various meetings to try and get the various areas to work together.
  • well a day of face to face wrangling with other San Mateo county folks left us collectively applying for a grant. However this grant application isn't directly going to be for our area; it'll be for areas along 280 adjoining the protected SFWater lands.
    • this is the way it works - its more of a long term thing. I'm helping to get a stake in the ground as 'that Pescadero guy helps out let's help him out' in the future. I think it's a wise investment.
    • Also I am then hoping to get some $$ down the line, sort of on the side as we did with the 2019 summer chipping work.
    • BUT there is a remote-controled masticator and a trailer in the grant :) and I hope we can use that equipment down the line.
