Preparing Our Forest

We're living in a Forest which has been in drought conditions for most of the last 10 years. Even before that in the 60's Pescadero was the location of a wildfire which destroyed 30,000 acres. Rob Skinner ( et al ) has been working on a community plan to reduce the undergrowth and fuel. A meeting in early November featuring Rich Samson ( sp ) was very eye opening. The Forest page is where we're gathering his insights and preparing or response.

Preparing Our Roads

The Butano Water Company is responsible for our roads. During the 'Tree Trimming' meeting in November 2018 Cal Fire's Forestry guy turned the direction of the meeting to discuss issues he saw with firefighting in our Canyon. The Preparedness/Roads page is where we're reviewing his suggestions.

Given the two local fires over the past 3 years we do remain focused on preparing for fire.

Investigating Escape and Exit Routes

Escape means we're all getting the heck out. Frankly so far that's Canyon Road. P.L.E.A.S.E

Exit means we're here for a while, can't used Canyon Road, and need to get in and out.

We started talking only about Escape, so that's the common term you'll see in here, but really our Escape Routes are our Exits for long-term events. yes it's confusing but here we are

Preparing for Water

We're out of the direct effects ( mostly! ) of projected sea level rise over the next decade, which is a good thing. For the Canyon the most direct impact will be the 5-11 % increase of severe El Nino storm effects over the next 10 years. This will re-enforce our CERT training guidance that our winter season danger is that of landslides.

Preparing YOU

Yes you. you have to be able to get the heck out of Dodge if there is something going on.

1. The first order of business is being Prepared - starting with your Go Kit'
2. second point is working together
3. the third is effective Communications.
4. Drills are important.

Community Emergency Response Team: CERT

CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) volunteers are a group of community members who are ready respond as an auxiliary to the fire department in the event of a major disaster. CERT team members:

• Receive 20 hours of training delivered over 4 weekend days.
• Learn techniques in the areas of: first aid, light search and rescue, fire extinguisher use, medical triage, emergency communication and more.
• Participate in periodic drills/exercises on a volunteer-friendly schedule.
• Learn how to remain safe while helping others.
• Assist Fire and other Emergency response personnel in the event of a large-scale disaster.

Neighborhood Coordinators

Using a 'divide and conquer' approach we've divided the Canyon into 16 separate neighborhoods, and looked for volunteers to co-ordinate activities in each neighborhood.

In the greater scheme of organized emergency preparedness these folks are called Preparedness/Neighborhood Coordinators
