At the end of 2018 the question of CalFire grants came up. Casey did a 2 week sprint but in the end was unable to pull enough together to file for a grant. Here's [[Preparedness/CalFire2018Grants|the work]] log for that period.

* CaseyD has worked with the San Mateo County Firewise director and folks from RCD on our county's grant request. It looks like it's going to focus on neighborhoods on the edge of SRA's - the LRA of Belmont Heights and San Carlos' Devonshire Canyon. It's important to note that during the past year CalFire has been sending the message that 'historically there is about 1 grant per CalFire district. This has lead to a situation where both San Mateo and Santa Cruz counties share a district and have _plenty_ of areas which have laudable grant requests. CalFire folks have been using various meetings to try and get the various areas to work together.
* well a day of face to face wrangling with other San Mateo county folks left us collectively applying for a grant. However this grant application isn't directly going to be for our area; it'll be for areas along 280 adjoining the protected SFWater lands.

* Intro by Wendy - grp started after Airstrip Fire, meet monthly, have walkie talkie plan, have done various canyon investigations WRT exit routes etc.
* How did you find out?
** Vanessa - saw fire from along 1 thought it was HMB, partner saw / smelled nothing. asks: are there other ways out? how do we get out of here?
*** discussion, centering on "fast exit Canyon" hours really to climb out on poorly maintained trails across private land.
** Susanne - calls many folks but confusing stories from all the people called. Basic response: " We will come to get you out if you need to get out" Feels like it can't be trusted.
** Cotton - got a call from a friend in SF, got on radio, Ed Coffeey answered! very comforted by use of radio! remembered to pack CASH MONEY this time, prior power outage meant no cash available. please remember to do this folks.
** Michael - heard on radio while driving around San Mateo
** Susanne - ppl did't seem alarmed in town. more ( unhelpful ) gossip in town than anything concrete
** William - mentions that generators are hot and could cause more fires
** casey - Received SMC alerts ( quick check, not all folks got the SMC alerts, even in-canyon ) then monitored FireDispatch.com.
** jen - heard from someone then went to wendy's to help. she and mike walked the canyon updating people, very helpful. Used an old phone plan list from ?Larry and Nancy?
** wendy - got a call from friend in emerald hills ( another high risk area, but more roads out ) people called like crazy so the phone wasn't useful. too many folks without the little radios.

No one at station 59 answering phone. ( all out fighting fire ) Later their replacements didn't know about Butano Park or anything. what's up with our maps? ( different organizations, no one to do 'introduction' to area to out of towners, etc ) Others said that the phone was answered by a crew from Belmont ( or something that began with a 'B' ) and that they had no idea about Butano Park aka the Canyon.

Sheriff's department wasn't saying anything about evacuation. ( note: they probably can't following orders and procedures for emergencies. they want to be very careful on causing a mass exodus )

consensus - get your stuff ready. have cash around in fire season. make better community friends with fire station ala La Honda ( may be diff; La Honda is volunteer Sta 59 is professional ? )

casey - Ari had said in this situation that 911 is the place to call. it helps even as they keep count of how many people are calling which may change their response.

Note even tho we're in a redwood forest the mount of the canyon isn't. The Mushroom farm building complex is about 3 miles from the mount of the canyon. In the Paradise fires ignition causing fires were caused by embers blowing as far as 2 miles.

Casey was asked to make a formal proposal and place it on the agenda for the next meeting.

there was discussion about the emergency procedures surrounding the gate. During power outages the initial policy will be to 'lock it open' so save the batteries for when / if we really have to keep it locked for some unknown reason.

discussion about if we should keep a sign on the gate explaining why it was open, to stop people pestering the gatekeeper / Don

about a dozen others, some school teachers, Puente staff etc.

Teachers from Red Cross - Jim X and Bill OCallahan. OES San Mateo County

Goals - sense of operating a shelter, get skills and hints.

1st - plan for yourself.
* gather your out-of-area contacts
* be sure you can contact them
* meetings places
** first near your hosue
** second in a nearby town - you all may not be able to get back to your house.
* Pescadero is small; just plan at meeting at the shelter.
* build a 3 day / per person kit for your family. Ideally
** one in car
** one in home
** one in work. gets expensive

Shelter - Feeding.
* Donations are a big issue. turn away anythign not sealed or made in a commercial kitchen. No matter how nice it looks.
*People always bring too much stuff to 'help' out at a shelter.
* $ to the Red Cross is best as then the Red Cross doesn't have to manage the actual excess thigns they get.
* when requesting food remember to count the staff!

Shelter - staffing.
use the SHelter Manager Checklist ( provided )

Shelter - Pets. No Pents not inside. invite people to stay out in their cars with their pets but can't bring them in. Service animals are good; they have to actually do something physical. Emotion Support pets: no.

SHelter - one entrance in and out. Sign people in, sign people out. Don't use emergency exits unless there is a building emergency.
